Sinharaja Forest is important to us as a special evergreen wetland forest to Sri Lanka among the forests of the world. This Sinharaja Forest is located in the Kalawana Eectorate where I live in the Rathnapura Disrict of the Sabaragamuwa province.

The total area or 7,648 hectares.It range in altitude from 300m to 1,170m. Sinharaja starts from Kalawana Veddagala Kudawa area and extenda to Hiniduma area in Galle in the Southern province. 

The gaint Nawadagasa in the rare evergreen forest is a masterpice of nature. Spread over 20-25 acres, the giant puswela is a valuable product of nature that amazes visitors.

A large number of rare fish endemic to Sri Lanka are found in the streams of several beautiful waterfalls.

There are also many rare and valuable herbs. Valuable species of Veval,Maval,Kukuluval can be seen for many lilometeres. Vesak varieties, Gurulu Raja, Maharathmal, Narilatha, Orchid, Heen Bowitiya, Atteria, Na and other rare and valuable flowers can also be seen in this evergreen Sinharaja forest.

Many endemic bird species such as the to watharathu malkoha, Kahibella, Valikukula and the haban cock can also be found in this forest. Dadulena, Urulawa, Uguduwa, Salamandara, Unahapuluwa, Iththawa as well as Leopards, Miminna, deer, Gona and wild elephants roam the forest.

When we go up to the balum rock in this forest, we can see a large part of the Sinharaja forest in a very spectacular manner. Due to this forest there is no shortage of rain in our area. Sinharaja is also the main catchment area of the Kukuleganga Reservoir. 

It is unfortunate that today man is clearing the forest for economic crops. It is the duty and responsibility of all of us to protect the Sinharaja Foret Reserve, wich is continuously awarded the title of ලකඳර ගණපති, which plays a vital role in the survival of living beings by releasing the oxygen into the ozone layer.
